While most bed bugs hide in cracks and gaps
in the bed frame, and in mattresses or box springs, bed bugs
can hide anywhere in a room. They can hide
in any part of a piece of furniture. They can hide behind
molding, inside outlet covers, in dresser drawers, on the
underside of dressers, inside the dresser cabinet, inside
standing armoires, beneath armoires, in couches and upholstered
furniture, on or around smoke detection equipment, and along
the tack strip beneath the edge of the carpet. Most importantly
they can be found in sheets, pillow cases, and blankets.
They can also be found in piles of clothes left on the floor
and clothes located in closets and dressers. This is just
a partial list of area in a home where bed bugs can be found.
To provide you with the best possible service, we need your help. Please read
and follow the following preparation instructions carefully.
The before treatment preparation steps are as follows:
1. All clothing and bed linens should be placed in plastic
bags and laundered on the highest possible temperature settings. After
laundering the clothes should be placed in new (previously unused) clear plastic
bags. The bag the clothes were in before they were washed must be thrown out.
The bag should be sealed tight with duct tape.
THE REASON FOR THIS: The heat from the dryer will kill bed bugs. However there
could be bed bugs that have fallen off into the bag before the clothes were
washed and dried. If the clothes are put back into that same bag, those bed
bugs could re-infest the clothes.
2. After laundering, clothes should be placed in brand new
bag or a Tupper-ware type container.
3. All non-clothes possessions should be placed in heavy duty
clear plastic bags.
4. All dressers and nightstands
should be emptied and there should be NOTHING in
or on them. If number 2 is followed then this will happen
automatically.
THE REASON FOR THIS: We will need to turn the furniture upside down to treat
properly.
5. All carpets should be thoroughly vacuumed. The bag
should be thrown out.
6. Toiletries should be kept separately in a clear plastic
bag.
7. Discard as many clutter items as possible. Examples of
clutter include junk mail, extra phone books, magazines, bags, and shoe boxes.
THE REASON FOR THIS: CLUTTER IS THE ENEMY. Bed bugs can hide
in these items.
8. NOTHING should be left stored underneath the bed.
9. In certain cases it may be necessary to discard heavily
infested items. This can be particularly true of upholstered furniture.
10. We will call 24 hours before the scheduled service date
to confirm that all preparation steps have been completed.
The after treatment protocol we are recommending are as follows:
1. Allow 3-4 hours after treatment to enter the treated rooms.
2. Do not store anything under the bed.
3. If this is the first treatment leave clothes and possessions
in sealed bags. Take only what you need.
4. Keep in mind that the same preparation steps will need
to be repeated within a 10-14 day period. And again in another 10-14 day period.
Do not place items back in the dresser.
5. Remember that if a bed bug is observed it doesn’t
mean the treatment has not worked. Bed bug control is a challenging process
and multiple visits can be required for eradication.
